Animal Experimentation

Cats have nine lives and I know how to tuck-n-roll.

When I was a kid, my dad had a flat roofed shop about eight feet high attached to the back of our house.

When I was a kid, my neighbors had a big white tom-cat named E.B. I have no idea what the letters E.B. stood for, but that’s what his name was.

When I was a kid, my brothers and I (along with the neighbor kids) had far too many unsupervised hours filled with curiosity and mischief.

They say that curiosity killed the cat. I’m thankful I’m not a cat. But they also say that cats have nine lives and when a cat falls, he always land on his feet. (I should add here when dropped or thrown, but I think the correct term is fall.)

So, what do we have here?

8’ high flat-roofed shop + 1 cat (with 9 lives) + 6 Mischievous kids = Multiple Animal Experimentation*

I couldn't tell you how many times we dropped/tossed poor E.B. off Dad’s shop, but we were all shocked…cat’s really do land on their feet. Not only that, but sometimes they manage to even run away before all four feet hit the ground. Amazing, huh?

This line of experiments led to many attempts by my brother to see if he was part cat. He didn't land on his feet, but he could tuck-n-roll like a pro.

Looking back on my childhood, I see now that I’ve always had a creative imagination. One time I thought I could be Mary Poppins and float with an umbrella from Dad’s shop roof and land on my feet like E.B. It’s a good thing I could tuck-n-roll, because even with the assistance of the umbrella, my cat skills were non-existence. (Click here if you want to read a 'fictionalized' story I wrote about that incident.)

I feel like poor E.B. He didn’t choose to be the source of our decision to use live animals for experimental purposes. While I believe God can intervene in answer to our prayers, I’m learning that free will does indeed exist. Sometimes people make choices around me or for me and it tends to feel similar to being thrown off that shop roof.  It is a struggle, but I'm learning to rest in the Truth that God has a plan for me. Despite what man’s input is into my life, His purposes will be fulfilled.

I may not understand the what’s, where’s, and why’s of the choices that send us into mid-air, but sometimes I believe God gives us supernatural ability to land on our feet. Maybe this ability comes from the multiple times I’ve had to tuck-n-roll.

So tell me…any of you feeling like E.B.?

Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.                                                                                        Proverbs 19:21
*no animals were harmed in the creating of this post...but in the living of it, that's questionable.

  1. Life is a free fall, isn't it. "Thank you, Jesus, for catching us and setting us down gently on both feet ... time and time again."

  2. Yes, I feel like E.B. many times, but I'm learning that if I don't fight being tossed about, it's easier to "tuck and roll" and not get hurt in the process.
Thanks for the the chuckles, Mari.
I love you! (praying for you)

  3. I have two cats, but I'm the one who goes off the roof, so I can relate!

    Thanks.

  4. I, also go running off the roof, pier, bridge. Sometimes I do it because I feel I'm about to be pushed--and I'd rather send myself. Not a great response. Lots to think about. . . as always:).

  5. I've seen that tuck-n-roll out of you many times and God always land you safe in His arms. Praying for those choices that are made for your life beyond your control. Always praying for you. Love you, Dear Friend.

  6. Yes, and thank the Lord He doesn't always give us what we pray for - sometimes, for our own good, He says no. And those cats - love your photos as we have 16 paws around here who run our house...GRIN

  8. We have some of those choices made by others coming our way this week, hence the direction this post took. If you think about it, we'd appreciate your prayers. It comforts me to know I'm not alone when I'm mid-air, claws spread, praying for a gentle landing on my feet.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment, dear friends.

  11. who'da thunk we'd have two furry foods for thought in flying cat format? wonders never cease :)

Mari, my cat says he's glad he didn't live on your block.

I'm glad God isn't a mischevious child randomly throwing me off a roof to see how I'll do. And I'm very glad for the "righting" mechanisms God has put in place, just in case we run into "Mari's Gang".

  12. Hmmmmm...checking my nails to see if they are spread out during mid-flight. Ha...get it? Mid... oh never mind.
Anyway, seems like there is a little bit of cat in each of us and we are all glad we don't live close to Mari (just kidding)...we are all glad for God's grace and mercy in our lives. Speaking of which, I will add my prayers to the others, too, Mari...be blessed and land solidly on your feet!!

  13. It wasn't me you all should have been scared of. My brothers were the tormentors. But I stuck around for the entertainment.

Landing on my feet, tuck and roll...either way I am praying for soft landing.

Thanks for stopping by and reading.

  15. You know, sometimes we don't land on our feet, but crash and become injured. But even then, God is there to heal and re-work the pieces.

  16. Oh yeah. I've learned the tuck and roll routine and it sure is helpful when you find yourself with nothing under your feet.

(EB is a great name for a WHITE cat. LoL.)
