Fuel for Encouragement

"God made us: invented us as a man invents an engine.

A car is made to run on gasoline,

and it would not run properly on anything else.

Now God designed the human machine to run on Himself.

He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn,

or the food our spirits were designed to feed on.

God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself,

because it is not there. There is no such thing."

~C.S. Lewis

I'm in the taxi driving season of mamahood. No matter how simple we try to keep our lives as a family, it seems the engine stays running.

I think that's why C.S. Lewis' quote above touched me so. Just as gasoline (and lots of it) keeps my SUV burning, so the Holy Spirit fans the flame in me. And when I run on any source for energy than my Jesus, I burn out even faster than my gas guzzlin' Ford.

He is the food my spirit was designed to feed on. God won't provide righteousness, peace and joy apart from Himself, because there's no such thing. But He is faithful. As I ask with a surrendered and obedient heart, He will give me way more than I could ask or imagine, knowing exactly what I need in order to do His will, according to His power at work within me (Eph. 3:20).

That's encouragement for all of us who long to be obedient Christians!

How different would our lives be if we surrendered to Him as our only source for energy, strength and godliness every day? And how much would it spur others on to do the same?

I dare say, we can't even imagine.

"For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven on earth is named, that according to the riches of His glory He may grant you to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith--that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

"Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to Him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen."

Ephesians 3:14-21, ESV
