Truly Free

Happy Birthday, America!

Today, the United States celebrates the day we became "a new nation, conceived in liberty."* The day we became the Land of the Free. And it fills me with heart-soaring pride.

But freedom doesn't cause the same emotion to rise up in  everyone. To the diverse peoples of all cultures and walks of life populating Earth, freedom surely evokes different feelings, memories, convictions.

Some could picture freedom as merely a pipe dream, maybe a possibility, or perhaps even a goal. And can you imagine how the word “freedom” might rankle an oppressive dictator angered by the outcries of his rebelling people?

Even in here in the “Land of the Free," not only are millions of children born wearing the shackles of poverty, thousands are currently being sold into modern day slavery. "Human Trafficking" is the new buzzword. According to recent statistics (which are, as you can imagine, sketchy at best), “up to 2 million people are trafficked worldwide every year. Of those, 15,000--18,000 are in the U.S.”*

Shocking, isn't it?

When the American colonists were feeling the oppression of religious tyranny, they fought to be free to worship God when and where and how they chose, to be free from a king who set himself above the King of Kings. Somewhere along the past 2+ centuries, we, as a country, forgot the only freedom worth fighting for: freedom in Christ.

No matter what your worldly circumstances are, whether you are warden or inmate, ruler or servant, master or slave, unless you know Jesus Christ, you will never find true release. You, like all human beings owe a debt, and there is nothing you can do to repay it.

God says that all have sinned, and that the wages of sin is death. But He also provided a Redeemer, an Advocate – His very own Son – who willingly paid that debt; He died for you. But because Jesus is also God and above ALL powers, He overcame death and defeated sin.

He offers this freedom, this new life in Him, to everyone. All He asks is that you believe Him. Admit to Him that you know you've sinned, and that you're tired of making mistakes. Ask Him to forgive you. Ask Him to change you.

And He will.

"…anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person.
The old life is gone; a new life has begun!"
2 Corinthians 5:17

"So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free." John 8:36

Have you been set free by Christ? If not, or if you're not sure, please contact me or any of the Jewels of Encouragement contributors. We'd be blessed to help you.

In His Love,

  3. Freedom in Christ is THE BEST freedom of all, for sure. And yes, there are shocking things going on in our country and around the world. Is amazing how we are shielded from it here in the US. We are great at sticking our heads in the sand. Thanks for sharing, Cat. <3
